Remarks: The red tail penguin tetra is a new take on a classic that has taken the aquarium scene by storm in recent years. Penguin tetras have been a staple in the hobby due to their hardiness, active swimming patterns, peaceful disposition, simple but attractive coloration, and ease of breeding. This locality shares all of these characteristics but with the addition of a bright red tail that pairs beautifully with their silver and black bodies and really makes them stand out.
In 2017, the red tail penguin tetra was discovered in the Rio Teles Pires which is one of the headwaters of the Rio Tapajos that is known for its vast biodiversity. It was exported in fairly limited numbers and commanded a hefty price tag for wild caught individuals. However, with these fish now being bred in fairly large numbers in Germany and Indonesia, somewhat more affordable captive bred fish are available within the hobby. These fish are also more hardy compared to wild caught individuals, but still do best when kept in soft, acidic conditions.
Like most smaller tetras, red tail penguin tetras should be kept in groups of 6 or more to make them feel secure and to reduce any nipping behavior toward other species. Providing lots of hiding spaces such as live plants will further boost their confidence and can help trigger breeding behavior along with brighter coloration.
