Remarks: Red cherry tetras are one of the many new tetras from Brazil that have only been in the hobby for a few years. As they are such a new species, they have yet to be formally described so their current scientific name of Hyphessobrycon sp. "Mzuel 17771" is only a placeholder for now. Not much is known about these fish other than they inhabit warm, acidic, blackwater streams where their bright red and orange colors aid them in blending in to the reddish-brown water. These areas have plenty of leaf litter and fallen branches and simulating these conditions in captivity will result in getting the most out of these beautiful tetras as you watch them spar and display for each other. You may even be lucky enough to have them begin spawning for you, though they are not the easiest species to breed.
It is not hard to see why the red cherry tetra is such a desirable species among fishkeepers. Their rarity along with their crystalline orange bodies and deep red fins make them irresistible for any tetra lover. Many describe them as larger versions of ember tetras due to their similar coloration. Red cherry tetras stand out, even from a distance, despite their small size due to their bright colors and active behavior, especially among green plants. They do well in community set-ups and planted tanks with both bright or subdued lighting though darker conditions bring out their colors the best and make them feel more comfortable. Like the majority of tetras, they are schooling species that should be kept in groups of 6 or more. When all these conditions are met, you will be rewarded with a true gem of a fish.
