Remarks: The red spotted severum is a classic among the medium to larger sized South American cichlids. They have been a mainstay in the hobby ever since they were line-bred (and possibly hybridized) into existence. Being a man-made variant of severum produced long ago, it is unknown what the original species they were line-bred from or were possibly hybridized with was. At some point in this process, or likely what started the project, was a few fish that had a mutation called xanthochromism. This mutation, similar to albinism but not the same thing, causes a reduction in darker pigments and an increase in yellow pigments causing the beautiful gold color displayed by red spotted severums. After this, the fish were further line-bred to have the striking red spots they are also known for.

  Like other severums, red spotted severums grow large enough to act as centerpieces, but they are not tank-busters. These mid-sized cichlids are typically peaceful unless they are spawning. Small tank mates that can fit in their mouths and plants usually do not mix well with severums as they are likely to be eaten. As they have been in the hobby for so long, they have become a very hardy fish that can handle a much broader range of parameters compared to their wild counterparts. Still, they will display better coloration and have less of a chance of falling ill if kept in soft, acidic conditions with plenty of tannins.
