When you receive this fish it will be in brackish water at a salinity of 15 ppt (parts per thousand) and we recommend you keep them in water close to the parameters you receive them in. Once settled into your aquarium you can slowly change the water parameters to your liking.
Remarks: Pseudomugil cyanodorsalis are found around coastal waterways in Western Australia that vary in salinity due to changes in tides. In nature they are found in full salt water and in full fresh water. These small fish do best in groups of 5 or more and they can be kept in a 10 gallon tank with the right amount of salt.
We raise and breed this fish at our facility in brackish water with a salinity around 15 ppt or 1.012 specific gravity. From our experience we have found Pseudomugil cyanodorsalis to do best in brackish water as opposed to fresh water with little to no salinity. We recommend using marine salt and adding approximately 2 cups (or 1.42 pounds) of salt per 10 gallons of tank water. You can buy a cheap refractometer to help track the salinity levels. Make sure to mix your saltwater for water changes in a separate container and never directly add marine salt to the aquarium. These fish are amazing to keep and watch in a tank with extravagant displays! They also are not difficult fish to breed when using a spawning mop.
