Remarks: The Leopold's angelfish is the third accepted species in the Pterophyllum genus and can be found in both northern Brazil and southern Guyana. There, they can be found in slow moving, acidic tributaries under floating plants and wood. These fish are commonly misnamed as Pterophyllum dumerilii though the accepted scientific name is Pterophyllum leopoldi. One of it's common names, the Roman-nosed angelfish, comes from an identifying feature of this species where the face has a more arched slope and a longer mouth. This shape is not always easy to identify when the fish is young, so another aspect to look for is the presence of a black blotch just under the beginning of the dorsal fin. Upon maturity and when in the right conditions, the Leopold's angelfish display a bright blue, iridescent spot on its gill plate just behind the eye and also possesses red fins that stand out nicely against their muted yellow bodies.
While this species is intolerant in regards to high pH or hardness, it is more tolerant in regards to required space compared to its relatives with 30 gallons being enough for a pair. This is due to the fact that the Leopold's angelfish is the smallest of the Pterophyllum genus, typically growing only to about four inches in length and six inches in height. Being smaller makes it an even better candidate for a peaceful South American tank compared to scalare or altum. Despite all these great qualities, the Leopold's angelfish is rarely imported or bred in captivity making it very uncommon in the hobby.
Angelfish do best when housed in South American community setups. Pairs may act aggressively when spawning, but the species is typically peaceful overall. Provide them with plenty of tall decorations such as driftwood and sword plants to swim through and use as spawning surfaces.
