Remarks: Marble Hatchetfish come from many parts of the Amazon, Orinoco, and Parana river basins but only in blackwater sections that are heavily stained with tannins. They get their name from the distinctive body shape - they have a very large, thin curving breastplate that makes the shape of a hatchet. These unique little fish have several irregular brown bands across their body that may fade or intensify with their mood and health. This interesting patterning and their small size has made them a very desirable species of hatchetfish.
With large, strong pectoral fins, hatchetfish are capable of launching themselves out of the water when frightened. As they are very skittish, it is recommended that you keep them with a tight-fitting lid. Floating plants are an added measure of protection while also functioning as a calming mechanism. Hatchetfish typically hover high in the water column, with their flat backs parallel to the surface, adding movement to an otherwise unutilized space.
